Meeting Schedule
The Philatelic Society of Pittsburgh holds its meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month in Holy Cross Hall in the First Lutheran Church, located at 615 Grant Street, Downtown Pittsburgh. The church is directly across Grant Street from the U. S. Steel Tower (The UPMC Building).
Parking is available at the Mellon Square Parking Garage, located around the corner on Sixth Avenue.
Members start arriving between 6:00 and 6:30pm. Informal session begin at 6:00pm. Program presentations and business meetings begin at 7:00 and usually end about 8:00 or 8:30.
A Brief History...
On June 21, 1888, a group of influential Pittsburgh businessmen met at the home of G. C. Lubitz to discuss their common interest in stamp collecting. Messers I. Stauffer, E.E. Buvinger, William McKinnell, D. A. Behen, G. C. Lubitz, P. H. Shafer, and William Biddle met at the house on 2915 Penn Avenue, and selected Mr. Stauffer to act as chairman. They decided that officers would be nominated at the next meeting, that Messers Lubitz and Behen would find a room centrally located for future meetings. Also that the other gentlemen would be informed by postcard that they would assemble there on Wednesday, July 11, at 8 p.m, and that each member should come with 50¢ for possible future meeting expenses. They also agreed to put off naming the organization until The American Philatelic Society had been consulted.
On August 1, 1892, the group became Chapter 5 (No. 457) of The American Philatelic Association, and the original seven members adopted the name, Twin City Philatelic Society, (Allegheny and Pittsburgh were then separate municipalities). It was converted into the American Philatelic Society (APS) Life Chapter 2 (No. 122) on October 1, 1921.
In 1908, Allegheny became a part of Greater Pittsburgh, and six years later on October 6, 1914, the stamp club's name was changed to The Philatelic Society of Pittsburgh.
